An Archive of Pictorial Reductions for Past Grazes
by Walt "Rob" Robinson, webmaster
Introduction
Pictorial Reductions (PRs) are quite simply drawings that give a visual comparison of what was predicted to occur versus what was observed as reported by the observers, during a grazing occultation. This page contains a table, of the PRs of observed grazes which have been accumulated from a number of sources. These sources include those found in the Occultation Newsletter and on the Internet. A large majority of these PRs have been generated by Robert Sandy, and are located in his own personal collection. For an explanation of how to interpret his PRs, you might read his article located on his homepage. Robert allowed me to scan all the PRs he has done to date. Most of these were scanned in 800x600 screen size, with 300dpi screen resolution. You can download any of these to view on your own graphics software, by right clicking on the link, and doing a "save as". I would like to thank all those that have helped contribute to the archives. If you have any PRs that you may have generated, and would like to have them included in this listing, please let me know.
Definitions and Conventions
STAR = Designation given to the referenced star. This will be listed as either SAO Catalog number or Robertson's ZC (Zodiacal Catalog) number. Some listings show the designation with an (L) or an (R) next to the number. This was used to facility showing a large PR. When accessing the (L) designation, you will be looking at the left side of the PR; when accessing the (R) designation, the right side.
DATE = The date the event was observed. (mm-dd-yy format)
LIBR = Librations for the event. L is the Longitude Libration; B is the Latitude Libration.
ANGLE = Area of coverage of the event. WA (Watt's Angle) - the angle of the event around the limb of the moon, measured eastward from the moon's north pole. Essential for reappearance, as it locates the event with reference to lunar features. To use, mark a map of the moon around the circumference at 10 deg intervals, starting at the north pole. Mare Crisium is at about 300 deg. This provides the Watts angle scale. CA (Cusp Angle) - the angle of the event around the limb of the moon, measured from the nearest cusp. -'ve values indicate a bright limb event. The cusps are usually N (north) or S (south), but near full moon can be E (East) or W (west). If a lunar eclipse is in progress, CA gives is the % distance from the centre of the umbra, and is followed by a 'U'. Values up to 103% are possible.
Source = The person or organization who plotted the PR.
Conclusion
It is my intention of placing these PR's on the web, so that expedition leaders and observers, can have additional information to better plan for upcoming grazes. The current ACLPPP's show past grazes, that were used to generate the predicted profiles. If a past graze is listed here, with a plotted PR, then the user can now see a graphical representation of what was observed for that particular graze. Hence, the more information available, the better chance of a successful graze.
This page will be periodically updated, as more reports are scanned and added to the database. In the near future, I will also have available, the cover letters that went with some of these PRs, which will give an analysis of the observed event.
